REVIEW: The Hangover Part 2, or Go See Bridesmaids...
Having seen the trailer for The Hangover Part 2, it was clear that director Todd Philips was going back to the well, but I didn’t fully anticipate how much water he’d be drawing out or how dirty it had become.  This sequel is darker, more vulgar, and uglier than its predecessor.  Those would be compliments if the movie was funny, but I felt little joy while watching The Hangover Part 2.  The...

REVIEW: John Carpenter's The Ward, or Carpenter's...
John Carpenter has made a number of fantastic films over the span of his career, including Halloween, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China.  Many horror fans consider him to be a master: a title that would be rightfully deserved, in my mind, even if only for Halloween alone.  It’s been nearly a decade since Carpenter’s last feature film (Ghosts of Mars, a movie I haven’t seen, but is widely...

REVIEW: Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation, or A Short,...
Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation is a simple, yet gratifying short that should please any fan of the Toy Story franchise (i.e. everybody, because is there anyone who doesn’t like those films?).  The plot, for as little as is required in such a brief amount of time, centers around the Toy Story gang’s efforts to replicate the romantic Hawaiian getaway Ken had planned for Barbie; a plan that is...

REVIEW: The Beaver, or A Beaver to Believe In
As a result of his more recent notoriety, Mel Gibson has become a figure of extreme public scrutiny: a prime example of persona non grata.  All of the negative attention, justly deserved or not, has affected the way people perceive Gibson not only as a person, but, I fear, as an actor as well.  If this is truly the case, it is a lamentable one since, despite never reaching the levels of respect...

REVIEW: Priest, or God Damn It, Paul Bettany!
What follows is a transcript from a pre-production meeting between the director of Priest, Scott Stewart, and the movie’s producers: SCOTT STEWART (SS): …so Priest, that’s what he goes by.  No known name, just Priest.  All capitalized and everything.  Pretty slick, huh?  So Priest, he’s fought in a war with the vampires before.  And this war was epic, like all types of clergy versus this horde of...

WatchWatch
As a fan of B to Z-grade movies on VHS, I’m really looking forward to what Mondo starts releasing with their new Mondo Video imprint.  Their first release, the shot-on-video early ’80s slasher, Sledgehammer, sold out in one day.  I’m not too disappointed about missing out on that one, but I’m very eager to see what the future holds.

REVIEW: Thor, or The All (Too) Powerful God of...
Although I’ve been a comic book fan for as long as I can remember, I’ve never been drawn to the cosmic superheroes.  To this day, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and to an even greater extent, Batman, are my all-time favorites because they seem to be more grounded in reality, which kind of sounds bizarre considering one of the main reasons for the existence of superhero comics is to provide an escape from...
